Signal is pretty good on the highway. We're heading to Altoona to visit the famous horseshoe curve and watch trains all day. Fun!

Well that was fun. family get together.

2 hour drive there.  Far enough that its into rural.  Corn and beans as far as the eye can see.. The occasional house, or farm stuff.  Even tree canopy for the roads in a lot of places.  Too bad it was too hot to drop the top. 

Of course coming back to destruction-concrete-ville pissed me off, but it was nice to be in what the Midwest was, and still should be for a little.

I forgot.  running joke for a long time was that on the assembly line, it started out with a single spark plug going down he line, and they assembled the car around that..

I just drilled a 1" hole in the inner fender, and covered that with a rubber piece after i was done.  Stupid ass engineers. 

Or, one of my Eldorados.  There was a sensor on the transmission, ( turbine shaft speed ) that could have been anywhere in a 360 degree arc.. but noooo cant have it too easy, so they put it in a place that you had to remove a motor mount to get to it.   or hiding the starter under the intake manifold..  WTF.

That is my personal goal to weather the coming storm long enough for when i am gone.  Unsure if that will be possible at the logarithmic increase in speed of destruction we are witnessing. 

Now, as far as the milennials not being the same around you as they are here, and older folks voting the wrong way, perhaps its regional, and your area is different than mine.  I do live in a mostly conservative area. All i can speak to on that is my own experience, not what i have 'heard', since i trust no source of information unless i can verify somehow. And i dont think i blamed ALL on them, but i do feel they are a major part of our future demise as they are programmed to want socialism and the collapse of what made us a great nation in the first place. By force if need be.  

And yes. i will clearly admit there are exceptions to every rule. There are good and bad people in every group, i'm only talking about overpowering averages. The ones that end up 'moving the dial'.

And ya i know i'm responding to my own post..  just to add to it since we cant edit yet :)

just to show that i wasn't against hybrid, I was going to convert one of my cars to hybrid once.  Just machine out an adapter for the transmission for a huge ass motor, add some batteries and then build a Tesla turbine to run a generator.. They are small and efficient, if you just 'run' them at full speed and not try to vary their speed. Original plan was to adapt a turbine directly, but the spin up/down time makes turbo lag look like a rocket engine.   Of course 'real' turbines are the same, they like to just run and not be messed with.  Ran into some practical issues, like batteries.. But conceptually it worked, made a go cart sort of thing for testing.

Another idea ( not really hybrid, just a idea ) was making small hydraulic motors to replace the wheel bearings, and use the turbine as a pump. Drop the transmission and drive shafts, and install the motor directly to the wheels. Of course this was only worked if your bearings were of that style, something like a 66 mustang, no.  The bearings are about the size of a small motor, perhaps a super fat can of drink.. so it made sense to me anyway. When i was changing one "hey, this looks a bit like a motor, i wonder if....". Besides, they do this in tractors and earth moving equipment often, so it wasn't really out in left field. Some basic testing ( on the same go kart ) worked, but far to inefficient and speed limited.   Back to electric, but still swap out the bearings idea.. but again, while it would have simplified the power train greatly, like the hydraulic idea would too, battery tech got in the way and made it mostly pointless. 

Entire idea was to convert existing cars over to something new, not engineer from the ground up.

Brushless motors would have helped too, but this was 35+ years ago so battery tech at the time just was not going to allow it.

My best flights were in a small private commuter prop when i worked for GM.Held perhaps 10 seats at the most, with the back couple full of baggage. Small self-service airport in a small town. Get there after dusk, pilot has a key, goes in turns on the lights and brings the plane around. Two of us grab the stairs and shove it up to the plane. Everyone drags their stuff out on the tarmac to toss in the back of the plane themselves. Hop in.. go.   Same sort of affair on the other side.

Only thing you have to watch is the noise in those things. Be sure to take earphones/headphones.   Learned that one on the first trip. ( that and your ears pop the entire way, since on our trips we never did really level off long enough for the pressure to stabilize )

I stopped flying before TSA as it was already starting to become a hassle in the terminals. I cant imagine what its like now. Today ill pay more, and take longer, just to drive.  And if i cant drive, i dont go.

I'm not sure I hate it, honestly. 


I actually love the take off, and the landing... at least, I'm the kind of guy who stares out the window in amazement. 

The in between sucks in coach. It is *much* better in business class. But even up there, an 8 hour flight is a long time to be stuck in a seat. 


Um... I dislike... a lot... the scary parts.

CAK is something like that. Very casual and easy to navigate. 

Long Beach and Reno-Tahoe International are also pretty old school.

I've been through Denver (several times), O'Hare (several times), Atlanta (several times), Philly (twice), Barcelona, Madrid, Heathrow (several times), Tokyo, North Carolina (several times), Puerto Rico, Hamburg, John Wayne (several times), Boston, San Jose, SFO (several times) Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, LAX (several times) -  I live with Sky Harbor and end up there all the time... Probably at least a couple I've forgotten... I may have... yeah, I think I've flown into and out of CLE, too. Actually, positive. 


SFO and Heathrow are probably the worst.

Well that isn't accurate, its not the actual flight, its that i'm not a fan of the hassles that go around it .  Back when we had a company plane, it was cool.   Park in the lot, walk out to the plane on the tarmac, and if someone is around, they slide the stairs up to the plane. hop in, toss your bags in the back and go.

 

I doubt even tiny country airports get to do that now.

That is the problem. Most of the people you know probably share most of your values. This is pretty common. People tend to define their view of the world through their perspective. It is why New York and California think they know what is best for Georgia and Nebraska (and why Nebraska and Georgia think California and New York would be doing better if they just did things the way they're done in Nebraska and Georgia.) 

It gets crazy granular, too. Black people in California think they can relate to black people in Chicago - and their culture and experiences are only superficially similar. I went to school with a black kid from Chicago for a while, and he could not get along with the black kids from California, and they didn't like him - which is why he ended up hanging out with all the white stoners.

They *still* believe the basic foundational untruths of their ideology - even if they believe their extremes have taken the train off the tracks. They still believe that *Biden* is a *better* choice than Trump was. 

They believe in institutionalized racism in America. They believe in the general ideas of gender theory and of critical race theory. They believe in the wage gap, and that the last election was won fairly and that there were no irregularities. They believe in AGCC as something that more socialized economic solutions can solve. Decided against putting on the OEM fenders i have had siting for several years in my garage, waiting to be painted and swapped ( still in the box even ) and instead going with tube outer fenders.  Been thinking about it, dont want to go thru it again in 3 years when i them and they rust out, so might as well do tube.

Listen - since Covid, my trips, vacations and dinners out have been *fantastic* - mostly because the massive crowds are *gone*. It costs more to do anything - and it will get more expensive - but here is what I think... 

Most of the people on the OTHER side of the divide would rather spend a lot more and have a lot fewer of the "wrong sort" of people at the places they go. 

The only time they want to see *you* is when you're bringing food to their table or taking it away. Certainly not sitting at the table next to them enjoying a rare, aged steak also. 

So... a truth that gets lost in the doctrines and dogmas of economic and class identity warfare...

I'm not a fan of flying.

Well that isn't accurate, its not the actual flight, its that i'm not a fan of the hassles that go around it .  Back when we had a company plane, it was cool.   Park in the lot, walk out to the plane on the tarmac, and if someone is around, they slide the stairs up to the plane. hop in, toss your bags in the back and go.

I doubt even tiny country airports get to do that now.

Mention that the air was so dry in the cabin everyone was coughing and how that air gets circulated.

I lived in Detroit for 4.5 months over 2 years.   The company I worked for had an office in Downtown Detroit.  I was there from 2009 - 2011.  I would stay downtown Detroit for a week at a time.  Downtown was dead after 6PM.  My first time up there I walked the 6 blocks from my hotel to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner.   There were less than a dozen people in the place including servers, bartenders, and customers.  There were no cars moving on my walk back.

I recently did some traveling, I was amazed in each city I stopped there was a local company that was upsetting a $200 billion dollar industry.  Apparently the companies in the different cities are run by three sets of slacker octuplets.

I searched the internets for "elevators on cruise ships" wondering if they had them ... and was presented with numerous stories of a 2015 incident in which a maintenance worker was crushed to death in an elevator shaft aboard a cruise ship.  Evidently he passed the Darwin Test by failing to lock out the elevator before working on it.  When he was crushed by the car, large amounts of blood began pouring out the doors like a scene from a slasher movie.

So yes, cruise ships have elevators, but they are not safe.

Of course, as many now know, JFK airport just went through a couple of days of hell-on-earth.  Flights delayed, canceled, diverted, people stuck in planes on the airfield for 20 hours, baggage pickup rooms piled high with more suitcases than can fit on the belt, and even a water main break that flooded one of the terminals.

There was an international flight that had to land at Stewart instead, and although the runway there is big enough for a jumbo, they don't have any jetways that are high enough, so they had to deplane on the airfield.  Brrrr.

I think I'll stay home until this passes.  :)

I am trying to keep to one airline too; in my case it's Delta.  I made the choice based on it being the airline I most enjoyed flying, but it may have been a poor choice based on the places I need to go.

When I am (God willing) not limping anymore, I might just take a train to LGA and fly from there.  <shrug>

When I would visit my parents I would rent a car from/to the airport.  The airport is about 50+ miles away, the rental place was close enough to their house it was a cheap option.  You can estimate prices on the Uber/Lyft websites, renting a car is about the same.

I was internal to the company support, so I rarely billed out to the clients.  I don't remember what I put down on my time sheet or if I was entering timesheets at that time.  In fact the 12 years I was there I billed out to customers less than 80 hours total.  In fact for a few years I stopped recording my time because I was told I didn't need to since I didn't work with external customers.  

As far as the guys that were on site, it was two trainers.   They were their to run the simulations and to teach.   Not tech guys, though they had one other guy there that was there as support for our application, but he was more of a desktop guy at that time.   

One project I did bill out to the customer, I was billed not as a Network Engineer/System Administrator or anything like that, I was billed as camera/sound crew.  We needed someone to fly to Minnesota and record some interviews with our customer's customer.  Everyone else that did this was out in the field doing these and they needed one more, so I got talked into doing it.  It was a nice change of pace.  

Years ago I had to travel to El Paso, TX for a second time for work. I had built a network on Ft. Bliss that was not connected in any way to their network, but once AT&T put in the T1s we were not able to connect to the network, nor were they able to get out.  

I had to fly out on the day after Thanksgiving as well.  We were at my wife's parents place, so the closest decent airport was St. Louis, which was a 2 hour drive.  I left my in-law's house at 2AM.  St. Louis said to get there two hours early, I had a 6AM flight.   I get to the airport at 4AM, park in Iowa, take the shuttle to the airport.  I get to the airport and there are a bunch of people there waiting to go through the security checkpoint.  The checkpoint was closed.  They didn't open up till 5:15.   I flew to Dallas (I think, I could have these backwards), had enough time to sprint to my gate to fly from Dallas to El Paso.   Get to El Paso, and after 10 minutes have it fixed.  The guys from my company that were there take me back to the airport, and I have 4 hours to kill.  I fly from El Paso to Houston, and I have around a 6 hour layover in Houston.  I land back in St. Louis at Midnight.   I drive back to Southern Illinois to my in-laws, and get there 24 hours after I left.  

I hated that trip.  The issue we ran into is I had to clear the ARP table from the firewall.  The Army delivered my connection via fiber.  They didn't have enough copper going to the building we were in, but they had plenty of fiber.  So I had a fiber converter to ethernet plugged into my firewall.  On the other end they took the fiber converter and plugged the ethernet into AT&T's router that we had to put in the Army Central Office.   Someone to test the fiber plugged their laptop into the end in the Central Office.  My firewall saw it and grabbed the ARP MAC address as the next hop and didn't release it when someone rebooted the firewall.   

Great time for a wedding in the Bahamas... 30+ft waves, sustained 180MPH winds... What more could you ask for?

Chicago for a destination wedding isn't too bad, my niece and her fiancee (father of her two children) were invited to a destination wedding in the Bahamas, the flight is about $800 per person. They decided not to take the children.  The hotel and food plan is about the same.

The flight home was on time and uneventful.  The wedding was fancy but manageable.  My sister is tolerable when she is the nonstop center of attention, so she was ok.  I'll post the other half of the story in the Food room.

Back from our trip to Niagra Falls with my wife and my side of the family.

Did they fix that water problem?  Was it a pain in the ass getting back across the border?  When I went up last week they only had one lane open after leaving customs.

Nope, that wasn't my flight ... my final destination was Dallas, not Louisville.  Regardless of what actually happened aboard the plane, the truly epic fail was that they allowed too many people to board the plane in the first place.  

That was my take, too...they knew, before boarding, that they were overbooked.    I love Amtrak; I used to take it all the time between Connecticut and Syracuse. But outside the east coast, it's just way too expensive.    The train system is used by over paid government workers and people employed in DC. It is safe but you might not want your children exposed to those kind of people.  Vehicle traffic around DC can be difficult.  My friend used Uber and had no problems with it.

   My dad used to tell me that the hoagie was invented when folks were selling sandwiches to the workers around the naval yard south of Philadelphia after the Depression. I was also told that they were called Hoggies for this reason.

   Subs and Grinders are terms coined elsewhere and seemingly more appropriate being a Jersey guy myself. A hoagie is prepared on a soft roll and served cold where as Grinders seem to always be hot and subs are a clever imposter of the hoagie. It is fun to travel and see other state's versions of this iconic sandwich. Even within Jersey itself, imposters can be found in shore towns and gas stations all over but I have never found a bigger imposter than in West Virginia. I am sure it was simply a comedy of errors that contributed to it's heightened level of horror that Elvira herself would've been sure to advertise on Saturday nights. Most certainly not a hoagie.

   I can say that one of the best (and worse) spin-offs hails from Cleveland Ohio at a place called "Mr. Hero". This had a half stale soft roll with minimal amount of ingredients, lots of Mayo and fried Bologna. Interesting drunk food for sure! Again, not a hoagie.

   Also found in New Jersey is a terrible place claiming to hoagies called "Mr. Sub". Unless you are in college, drunk or under the influence of a mind altering substance, surly you can up your experience by buying a sandwich in a vending machine or the next available Wawa and skip this terrible choice..

   Local place sells a "hot hoagie":

   They will let you double down on the meat as well.  Healthy it is not.  Thank god they wrap it in wax paper, as the black puddle it leaves if you don't eat it fast enough is disturbing, and you would not want it to stain anything it was set on.

   Plus the "ya get chips with that".  I liked them (probably a bit too much), but I can't eat that stuff anymore.

   And wow - what a horrific story. There are people who would take care of my kids, but basically, unless I get to the point where I must stay in bed, my husband considers anything I don't do an act of laziness.

   So  I got checked out - the doc said to take it easy, but he didn't say bedrest - he said try not to overdo it.
   He also said that (sorry if this is TMI) my cervix is long and closed (ie showing no signs of anything happening).

   He also said that the fact that I got to 39 weeks without incident twice before means my body apparently knows how to handle pregnancy, and is unlikely to screw it up this time.

   What I wanted was to attract *new* people that weren't within dialup distance.
   20 years ago that meant spending $300/month or more on a 56K circuit (or more than $1000/month for a T1) -- not the kind of money I could afford to spend on a hobby. I'm satisfied with how it ended up, but I do wish I'd been able to get us onto the Internet maybe 3 or 4 years sooner; it would have made a big difference.
